The user interface

Before we go to animation, let’s have a quick glance at the user interface.

In the top you have the menu bar. Here you can load and save files, import images, add layers and much more.

In the bottom you’ll find the time-line, that keeps track of your key-frames.

To the left and right you’ll find dockable windows, where you can select tools, colors, choose settings and more.

In the middle you have the canvas. The canvas is unlimited in size. The white rectangle in the middle of the canvas, is the camera field. When you open Pencil2D the first time, this size will be 800×600 pixels, but you can change it by double-clicking on the camera layer. Remember that the bigger camera field you choose, the more RAM and computer power you use and need.

Let’s animate!

Right above the time-line you’ll find these buttons. Here you can Add, Remove and Duplicate key-frames.

Be sure you are on the bitmap layer and on frame 1. Select the pencil tool, and set its width to 4 or 5. Draw a small circle in the middle of the field.

Go to frame 2. Press the Add key-frame button. Draw a small circle a little to the right of the first one.

Go to frame 3. Press the Add key-frame button. Draw a small circle a little to the right of the second one.

Go to frame 1 again. Press the Play icon, and hooray! — you’ve made your first animation.

If you find it cumbersome to press Add key-frame every time you want a new key-frame, you can make your life easier. Go to the menu and pick Preferences. Press the Time-line icon. Where it says “When drawing on an empty frame:” you choose the first option “Create a new key-frame”. Now, every time you go to an empty frame and start drawing, a new key-frame will be created on that frame.

Known Issues

This released focused on fixing as many issues a possible, however as a small team, there are only so many things we can fix at a time. Here is a non-exhaustive list of bugs that we are already aware of, but were unable to fix in this release. Rest assured, we will do our best to fix all of them eventually.

  • #748, #1004, #1098 Miscellaneous undo/redo issues. Possible fixes will be reviewed for v0.6.5.
  • #1033 Sound import and playback does not work with the Linux AppImage. Workaround: use flatpak or your distro package manager (if it offers the latest version).
  • #1117 The CLI (Command-Line Interface) export operation consumes more memory than exporting from within the editor itself.
  • #1019 The program may crash or erase selection content when using the shortcut.
  • #1120 Undoing Selection Flip X / Y will delete the drawing instead. A possible fix will be reviewed for v0.6.5.
  • #1133 Lag and buggy strokes with Huion tablets. Workaround: disabling the “linear optimizer” in your tablet driver may help if that option is available, see this post.
  • #1174 Inconsistent palette import behavior: Depending on which palette file format is used, the new palette may append or overwrite the existing palette.
  • #1177 Imported image position is modified by the canvas view center
  • #1179 Currently there’s an audio delay of 1-2 frames for in-editor playback & exported files. However on some systems the opposite happens where the audio delay on playback might be longer by 12-16 or more frames, but on export it works ok.
  • #1186 Quick Sizing is enabled on Paint Bucket Tool, but does nothing on a bitmap layer.
  • #1189 Zoom shortcut on drawing tools not working properly with the Middle Mouse Button (Win) and mouse input in general (macOS)
  • #1193 The feather slider widget (Brush Tool) has a higher max value than the input value, and any value above 96 pixels will not allow you to paint.
  • #1196 A unerasable stroke appears when drawing if you turn off the pressure sensitivity checkbox with drawing tools.
  • Playing back audio from any frame other than the first will slightly off-sync the audio in the editor. For now we recommend playing back sounds from the beginning and gauging the sound particularly for lipsync or musicalized action. Afterwards check your output with a dedicated video editor to avoid sync issues.
  • Color Palette (Bitmap): Some issues when replacing the first swatch remain. It is recommended you make a new item rather than changing it.
  • Color Palette (Bitmap): Swatches will only update using the Replace command when having a vector layer active. (Note: Create your custom palettes with a vector layer selected)
  • Selection Tool (Rotation): Using the SELECT ALL command (CTRL + A) and rotating a selection, will store the rotation transformation, if you create a selection and click on the drawing with the MOVE TOOL, it will rotate the selection again. Despite possible use cases this is a bug.
  • Undo: Undoing a drawing modification made on an empty frame creates a keyframe on that frame.
  • Undo: Undoing moving a keyframe to a new frame will create a blank keyframe on the place where it used to be.
  • Undo, Smudge Tool (Bitmap): You cannot UNDO the smudge tool at the moment.
  • Blur Tool (Bitmap): Pressing ALT with smudge tool doesn’t work, do not use it. Use other drawing apps for smudge effects.
  • Fill Tool (Vector): Filling a stroke requires the stroke to be selected.
  • Fill Tool (Vector): “stroke thickness” option will reset pressure sensitive lines width.
  • In general the Vector Engine is a WIP or not working as intended. Much more work will be required, please don’t use it.

Рекомендации и советы

Графический редактор Pencil2D потребует не слишком много времени на исследование доступных функций.

Частично с адаптацией помогут всплывающие подсказки для новичков и специальное руководство, скрывающееся в разделе «Помощь». А еще облегчат жизнь следующие советы:

  1. Непрозрачность окна. Если перейти в «Настройки» из раздела «Правка» и в верхней части меню «Общие» подвигать ползунок «Непрозрачность», то интерфейс начнет просвечивать те графические элементы (окна программ или браузера), которые находятся за Pencil2D. Трюк хотя и не новый, но все же редко встречается у конкурентов. А ведь так у художников появляется шанс почти молниеносно срисовать материалы с заранее подготовленного исходника и сэкономить время.
  2. Точность позиционирования. Редактор поддерживает стилусы и графические планшеты и разрешает в «Настройках» (раздел «Правка») изменять процент сглаживания, и настраивать позиционирование во время рисования на векторном слое.
  3. Горячие клавиши. Каждый раз обращаться к интерфейсу мышкой во время рисования или при подготовке анимированных сцен – слишком долго. А потому разработчики и предлагают заполнить раскладку из кнопок, разрешающих мгновенно перейти к нужному действию.
    Импорт и экспорт, добавление новых кадров и разворот холста, зеркальное отображение и отмена недавних действий: в «Настройках» подробно перечислены по умолчанию доступные комбинации, а также там предусмотрено возможность добавить собственные.

Обзор Pencil 2D animation

Pencil 2D animation – это бесплатное программное обеспеченье, предназначенное для работы с рисованной анимацией. Программа без проблем запускается на разных платформах – MS Windows, Linux, Mac OS. Однако она больше подойдёт для любителей и новичков, которые только осваивают азы 2D-анимации.

Инструменты для рисования

Все инструменты для рисования расположены в левой панели инструментов. Вы можете рисовать линии, замкнутые фигуры, делать заливку, настройки фигур. Также в программе предусмотрены инструменты размытия, ластик и инструмент выделения определённой области.

Правая панели инструментов располагает настройками цветов и прозрачности. К сожалению, нормальный градиент в этой программе сделать не получится, так как нет нужного функционала.

В программе даже имеются слои, правда, функций, связанных с их работой очень мало, и они в основном требуются для создания анимации. Однако при помощи слоёв вам будет легко работать с проектами, где имеется много элементов.

Программа поддерживает работу с графическими планшетами.

Импорт файлов

В свою композицию вы можете добавлять видео, гифки, звук и другие изображения. Последние можно редактировать в основной рабочей области. Но не стоит забывать, что программа предназначена в первую очередь для работы с векторной графикой, поэтому с растровым изображением можно делать только самые примитивные манипуляции, например, увеличить/уменьшить его размер и т.д.

Что касается импортированных звуков и видео, то тут тоже не слишком много доступных функций. Вы можете обрезать видео/звуковую дорожку, отрегулировать звук, переместить её в композиции и на этом всё. Все манипуляции с видео/звуковом производятся в нижней панели с таймлайном.

Работа с анимацией

В данном случае можно анимировать отдельные слои, где может быть один или несколько объектов. Вся работа будет производиться в графе таймлайна, что расположена в нижней части рабочей области.

Анимация создаётся при помощи создания точек на временной шкале. Для каждого слоя временная шкала отдельная, благодаря чему можно анимировать практически любой элемент композиции.

К сожалению, у временных точек не так много настроек, поэтому создать профессиональную анимацию вряд ли получится. Также в верхней части панели таймлайна есть инструменты добавления новых слоёв, временных точек, управления видео и звуком, а также графа настройки FPS.

Экспорт готовых работ

Примечательно, что программа не имеет собственного расширения для рабочих файлов, что сильно неудобно, когда речь идёт о больших проектах, так как нет возможности продолжить работу с того места, где её закончили.

К счастью, с сохранением готовых работ всё нормально. Вы можете сохранить их в виде слайдов из PNG-изображений (актуально для очень небольших проектов), либо экспортировать в GIF, Flash или формат QuickTime. Последнее актуально только для пользователей Mac OS, либо тех, кто установил на компьютер специальное приложение от Apple.

Как итог, программа ещё нуждается в доработке, но при этом отлично подойдёт для новичков, либо тех, кто занимается анимацией не профессионально. У программы есть несколько форумов поддержки, а также обучающие YouTube-каналы (в том числе и на русском языке). Однако проект в данное время практически заброшен.

  • Zooming out the camera layer to less than 25% will increase the chance of crashing.
  • There’s currently a rare issue where drawing on an empty frame exposure, with the default timeline drawing behavior, and undoing the stroke will corrupt the image rendering and you will not see the next strokes you draw. To workarund this simply pan the canvas or hide/show the layer.
  • #748, #1004, #1098 Misc undo/redo issues. New Undo / Redo system under development will be reviewed for v0.7.0
  • #1117 The CLI (Command-Line Interface) export operation consumes more memory than using the editor

  • #943 Color Palette (Bitmap): Some issues when replacing the first swatch remain. Only thumbnail changes color, but the actual color doesn’t. It is recommended you make a new item rather than changing it.

  • Smudge Tool (Bitmap): Smudging adds a white background to the stroke dab, this may cause unexpected results so use it with caution.
  • Blur Tool (Bitmap): Pressing ALT on the smudge tool does not blur the image, it keeps smudging the pixels.
  • Fill Tool (Vector): Filling a stroke requires the stroke to be selected.
  • Fill Tool (Vector): “Stroke thickness” option will reset pressure sensitive lines width.

Error Reporting

Difficulty: Easy

Project Core Objective: Create a way for users to easily submit error reports.

Description:

Although we have been working hard to eliminate program crashes, they still
unavoidably happen from time to time. When a user’s program does crash, it often
goes unreported. Even if they do report it, it is very difficult for us to get
enough information from the user to isolate the cause of the crash.

A server-side program will also have to be created to allow the reports to be
uploaded and accessed in some way by the Pencil2D developers. We currently do
not have any custom dynamic server pages, so the language used to achieve this
is up for discussion.

Edit the shortcuts

All these shortcuts are editable, so you can customize it your needs.

Here are the shortcuts for the tools:

If you want to change the shortcut for the Select tool, which is ‘V’, you can do it directly, by selecting the ToolSelect in the shortcuts window and then placing the cursor in the shortcut text box, and enter the new shortcut, or you can delete it first by pressing ‘Clear’ and then enter the new shortcut in the text box.

Here we have cleared the shortcut for ToolSelect, and want to enter the new shortcut. We place the cursor in the textbox and press ‘E’. Unfortunately, the ‘E’ is taken by the Eraser tool, so you are given the choice of overwrite the shortcut or cancelling.

Lasso Tool

Difficulty: Intermediate

Project Core Objective: Add a lasso selection tool to Pencil2D

Description:

A lasso selection tool is a common tool in image editing applications, and you
can look to any of them (ex. GIMP, Photoshop, Krita) for an idea of how it
should work, although it may be under a different name such as a “Free Selection”
tool. The basic idea is to allow the user to draw a selection using a
combination of hand-drawn and/or arbitrary straight lines to create a selection.
As mentioned, this is a common tool for image editing, so we need to add it to
support typical digital workflows and to provide the features that digital
artists expect.

The current code for selection is a bit messy and may need some refactoring to
properly implement this new feature. Additionally it will take some
consideration to assure that the selection transformation tools work well with
these irregular selections. Finally, during the selection process, you will need
to save the current selection line and render it live on the canvas. You should
be able to find some useful code for this in our existing polyline tool.

As an extension of this project if you are feeling very ambitious, many of the
higher-end editors have some form of a “smart lasso tool”, or “magnetic
selection tool” which will have similar user interactivity to the lasso tool,
but will automatically fit the selection to the contours of the image/layer. To
determine how this is done, you will need to do some research into
implementations of this feature in other open source project, or find relevant
research papers.

  • Blur Tool (Bitmap): Pressing ALT with smudge tool doesn’t work, do not use it. Use other drawing apps for smudge effects.
  • Fill Tool (Vector): Filling a stroke requires the stroke to be selected.
  • Fill Tool (Vector): “stroke thickness” option will reset pressure sensitive lines width.
  • In general the Vector Engine is a WIP or not working as intended. Much more work will be required, please don’t use it.

New Versioning Scheme

So what is this new release schedule we mentioned in the introduction? Well basically, our team members got together in a meeting and identified multiple issues with the way that we are currently releasing new versions of Pencil2D.

Among these issue was the fact that some of the big changes or new features are introducing new bugs into our program. Since there is a long time between releases, these bugs don’t get fixed quickly and we are left with a lot of users complaining about the same issues.

We initially made release candidates, but they proved ineffective in finding bugs because nobody would use them. To address this, we will not be making release candidates anymore and will instead be releasing a bug fix version a relatively short time after each feature release so that we can quickly fix bugs resulting from big changes and distribute those fixes to our users in a timely manner.

This release, and all future releases ending in an even number will be bug fix releases. These releases will not introduce any new functionality, but we still strongly recommend you update so that you can avoid potential crashes and other issues.

All versions ending in an odd number will be feature releases. The next release, v0.6.5 will be one such release and is slated to have many new features including possibly a new undo/redo system, x-sheet support, new layer manipulation operations, and more. Because they require more work, the feature releases will take longer than the bug fix releases.

I hear about “Nightly Builds” so what is it?

Nightly Builds are the most up-to-date, experimental versions that reflects the current state of the pencil2D application development. In Nightly builds you will have the latest features and bug fixes if you like to try something new. But you have to understand the nightly builds are not final versions and sometimes they can break more easily.

However, we encourage you to try the latest Nightly Builds whenever you encounter an issue with current pencil2d version, to see if the problem has already been fixed. That can help our dev team to avoid unnecessary or duplicate bug reports.
